John Scott Wotowicz, JD – Chief Executive Officer & Board member

John Scott Wotowicz is the Chief Executive Officer of inStream.

Previously, John was Vice President, Head of Global Business Development and a member of the Global Management Committee of Dimensional Fund Advisors focusing on firm management as well as the development of new strategies, relationships and products.

Prior to joining Dimensional, John was a Managing Director at Morgan Stanley where he established Europe’s leveraged finance industry and was ultimately responsible for oversight of the firm’s European investment banking business as a member of the European Investment Banking Operating Committee. Mr. Wotowicz was also one of the architects of Morgan Stanley’s global lending business and was a member of Morgan Stanley’s Global Credit Commitment Committee.

John graduated Duke University (1985) with a major in Public Policy Studies and was first a lobbyist, then an award-winning marketing representative for IBM in Washington, D.C. He graduated Columbia University School of Law (1990) as a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar.

Mr. Wotowicz sits on the boards of Hubub , Kichink! and numerous not-for-profit institutions including Washington, D.C.- based NPR (National Public Radio), Inc. where he chairs the Finance Committee, the NPR Foundation and New York’s New Museum of Contemporary Art  where he is the Board Treasurer. John is an instrument-rated private pilot, a producer of numerous West End (London) theater productions and a member of the Association of the Bar of the State of New York.

 

Paul Magis – Chief Operating Officer

Paul joined inStream’s executive team as Chief Operating Officer in the spring of 2015. Paul oversees inStream’s Toronto-based technology and client support teams and is a member of the Company’s Executive Committee.

Previously, he spent over 25 years in various leadership and executive positions within BCE, (Canada’s leading telecom and multi media company) including Operations, Client Care, Information Technology and Product Management. Most notably, he was the key figure responsible for planning and delivering various enterprise wide software solutions, managing large annual capital and expense programs, and devising and introducing scores of process and system automation efficiency initiatives.

Paul is a member of the Board of Directors of Toronto’s “Fight to End Cancer” supporting the world-renowned Princess Margaret Cancer Research Foundation, and is active in a variety of other Toronto-based charitable organizations.

 

Wade Pfau, PhD, CFA – Chief Planning Strategist

Wade D. Pfau, Ph.D., CFA, is a Professor of Retirement Income in the new Ph.D. program for Financial and Retirement Planning at The American College in Bryn Mawr, PA, and is the Chief Financial Planning Scientist for inStream Solutions. Wade is a recipient of Financial Planning magazine’s Influencer Awards; his research article on “safe savings rates” won the inaugural Journal of Financial Planning Montgomery-Warschauer Editor’s Award in 2011.  In 2014, Wade was honored in Investment Advisor’s list “The Most Influential People in and around the Financial Advisor Community”. Wade works closely with inStream’s Advisor Services team to develop new and innovative financial planning tools. Wade holds a doctorate in economics from Princeton University and publishes frequently in a wide variety of academic and practitioner research journals.

Bob French, CFA – Exclusive Consultant – Financial Planning and Analytics

Prior to joining inStream Bob French spent the past 5 years at Dimensional Fund Advisors in their Financial Advisor Services group. While there he worked with Financial Advisors across the country to help them solve their investment and practice management issues. While at Dimensional he was also in charge of the Dimensional Returns© Program. In this role he helped advisors understand how to use returns data, and when not to use returns data, to solve business issues and educate clients. Bob is a CFA charter holder.

Evan L. Russo, MBA, JD – Board Chair

Evan L. Russo is a Managing Director in the Investment Banking division at Lazard Frères & Co.

Mr. Russo is Co-Head of Capital Markets & Capital Solutions Advisory group and serves as a member of the firm’s Investment Banking Committee.

Mr. Russo has experience across a broad range of transaction and advisory services, including: Private Placements of Equity/Debt, Mergers & Acquisitions, Structured Equity & Minority Investments, IPOs & Rights Offerings, Public Debt & Equity Capital Markets, Capital Structure Advisory, Debt Restructurings, Derivatives & Risk Management, and Liability Management.

Prior to joining Lazard, Mr. Russo was at Goldman, Sachs & Co. in its Investment Banking Division and at Barclays Capital in its Investment Banking and Capital Markets groups. Mr. Russo is also a corporate attorney and practiced with the law firm of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy.

Mr. Russo received degrees from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania (M.B.A.), Columbia University School of Law (J.D.), and Queens College – City University of New York (B.A.).

 

Peter L. Corsell – Board Member

Peter L. Corsell is an entrepreneur and investor known for successfully bringing emerging technologies to market. MIT’s Technology Review recognized him as one of the world’s top innovators under age 35, the World Economic Forum named him a Young Global Leader, and the National Association of Corporate Directors included him on its inaugural list of leading directors under 40.

Corsell is Managing Partner of Twenty First Century Utilities, an investment holding company dedicated to acquiring and modernizing electric utilities to provide a superior customer experience. He is responsible for implementing TFC Utilities’ investment thesis of generating superior long-term returns through technological upgrades and embracing distributed technologies within the traditional regulated utility model.

He is also Chairman of GridPoint, which he founded in 2003 and led as CEO until 2010. An established cleantech leader and pioneer in the Internet of Things, GridPoint enables businesses, utilities and government agencies to maximize energy savings, operational efficiency and environmental sustainability. The company has deployed more than 500,000 connected devices and has saved its customers over $300 million and more than 3.7 billion kilowatt-hours of energy.

Additionally, Corsell is the cofounder of Hubub, a digital platform shared by individuals, publishers and brands for exploring and discussing interests, and a strategic partner of Bell Media, Canada’s premier multimedia company.

Earlier in his career, Corsell served with the U.S. Department of State in Havana, Cuba, and as a political analyst at the Central Intelligence Agency. He holds a BSFS degree from the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University.

 

Alex Murguia, PhD – Founder and Board Member

Alex focuses on inStream’s quest to create solutions for advisors that leverage their collective wisdom. As a Principal of McLean Asset Management Corp., he became an educated consumer on financial software products and overall technology trends in the investment advisory space. This inspired him to design a platform that creates a very nuanced approach to handling an advisor’s client servicing needs from a financial lifecycle management perspective.

David Smilow – Board Member

Mr. Smilow serves as Managing Director of Avenida and is a member of the Investment Committee. Mr. Smilow is a founder of Avenida, where he is responsible for portfolio and risk management.

Mr. Smilow has been a sponsor of over a dozen start-up companies and has acquired over USD $1 Billion of real estate assets in the United States and Latin America over the course of his career. He is also an advisor to and founder of ITEM and manager of Transportation assets in North America, and a board member of a large fixed income investment fund, and a global equity investment fund. He is an active venture investor primarily in Financial Technologies.

Mr. Smilow was the Founder and Chairman of Jefferson National Financial (“JNF”), an insurance company with over USD $2 billion of assets that offers variable annuity and other retirement products. Mr. Smilow oversaw investment activities and strategic planning for JNF, which was sold to Citibank in 2011.

In addition, Mr. Smilow was the Founder, Chairman, CEO and CIO of TeleBanc (now E*Trade Bank). Under his direction, Telebanc became the largest Internet bank worldwide before its sale to E*Trade in 1999. Prior to founding TeleBanc, Mr. Smilow was a fixed income portfolio manager and trader at Goldman Sachs and Drexel Burnham Lambert.

Mr. Smilow serves or has served on the Board of Directors of nine different companies, as well on the Board of Outward Bound Minnesota, Trust for Public Land Maine, and the Johns Hopkins Second Decade Society. Mr. Smilow has also lectured at Harvard Business School, New York University and Johns Hopkins University.
